The Plan (for now)

I’m sure there’s someone out there wondering what my ultimate plan is for the Bronco. Well, it’s always a bit in flux, but here are my thoughts at this moment in time.

Goal: a frame-off restoration of an uncut 1966 Ford Bronco to transform it into a modern restomod equipped for overlanding (that’s a new fancy term for car camping). Basically - I want to be able to drive it to work, but hit the woods anytime.

Major components

Axles

Keeping the stock axles - a Dana 30 front and a Ford 9” rear. I’ve upgraded to disc brakes front and rear, and installed an automatic locker in the back and a limited slip front. Other than that, trying to keep them stock.

Suspension

Since my body is an uncut version (meaning the rear fenders haven’t been cut to make room for giant tires and/or match the fronts), I’ve found selecting a new suspension can be tricky. It’s a delicate balance between enough lift to fit the tires you want, and making sure you preserve the character of the beast. Oh, and also we don’t want it to look goofy like those trucks that tailgate you on the freeway!

After perusing the entire internet of Bronco pictures, I’ve settled on a simple 2.5” suspension lift. I also reserve the right to to add a 1” body lift if some modification calls for it.

For no reason other than an old affinity to the brand, I’m going with a James Duff package. I’ve always loved their products, now I get to buy more!

Engine & Transmission

Well, first I was going to put in a 302 because it was an easy swap. Then a straight 6. Then electric. Last I was fixated on the Cummins 2.8L. Oh my God, this is hard!! Yeah, choosing the engine is quite the task, and feels like a life or death decision.

Ultimately, I’ve settled on putting in a 2.3L Ecoboost with a 10R80 transmission. It’s the same powerplant as my Focus RS, is easy to find parts for, and I’m confident it will move the Bronco down the road no problem. Additionally, others have done the swap and there are parts and adapters available. Also, it fits in the Bronco body + frame, which is more difficult than you would guess.

Body & Et cetera

Any firm details about the body are pretty slim at the moment. It feels far enough out to not be important (yet), but does occupy my mind some. For sure I know:

  • It will be a pretty blue color. Maybe nice tan accents and/or interior?
  • I am taking out the rear seats to make room for cargo and camping things.
  • It will have modern conveniences such as A/C, heater, and a stereo system.
  • I will try to preserve the historical charm and feel as much as possible.

Now you’ve seen a brief glimpse into my mind. I’m constantly evaluating options, re- evaluating options, and updating my plans as thoughts, opinions, and information changes. And, as one of my old bosses boss used to say, I’ll be keeping you informed…
